Whether it’s Will Smith wearing the iconic Ray Ban’s in the movie Men in Black, your favorite baseball player rocking a pair of stylish Oakley’s, or your favorite celebrity adorning a pair of cat-eye sunglasses on the cover of People Magazine- sunglasses have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on American culture.

Synonymous with the “cool factor” and the ability to seemingly make one look more attractive, sunglasses have long been a staple of American consumption with an astonishing  95.9 million sunglasses sold each year in the United States! While the reasons most associated with purchasing a pair include :aesthetics, style, and fashion- there’s one reason that should supersede them all: protection.

Much more than a fashion accessory, sunglasses are the number one deterrent when it comes to combatting ultra violet rays.  And here at Roslyn Eye Centre, located in Roslyn Heights, Long Island, our customers eyesight are our primary concern. To make you more knowledgeable on the subject, we have to come up with a list of the top 5 things to look for when you are buying your next pair of shades.

  1. Read Everything!
With ultra violet rays enemy number one, it’s vital that your pair of sunglasses offer 100% UVA and UVB protection.  Sunglasses that don’t offer UV protection can lead to a variety of ailments including; damage to the cornea and retina, cataracts, and even cancer. You should also look for sunglasses that eliminate 75 to 90 percent of visible light. Important to note, the darkness of the lens doesn’t equate to how much UV is blocked by the glasses.
  1. Make Sure They Fit
Just like trying clothes or shoes on, is extremely important that the sunglasses are a good fit for your face. Things to look out for: making sure the glasses aren’t too tight, not wider than your face, no excessive pressure on the bridge of your nose or ears, the lens is of adequate size, and your eyelashes never touch the frame or lens.
  1. Size Matters
It’s pretty simple. The more area your sunglasses cover, the better protected you are. Couple options are buying oversized glasses or wraparound style glasses. Both will help mitigate UV entering from both sides of your face.
  1. Know Your Face Type
Want a pair of perfectly fitting sunglasses? It might sound silly, but you first need to know what type of face and shape you have. Whether it’s Oval, Long, Round, Square, Heart, or Diamond, sunglasses are now built to cater every type of face imaginable.
